Mariusz Palej The Black Mill Czarny mlyn PL 2020, 100’, pl
Iwo spends his days in a small town. The local mill, which once burned down and now stands abandoned, makes him and his friends uneasy. His family also has painful, personal memories of the Black Mill and there are rumours that the place is cursed. With his mother losing her job and looking for a new source of income, 12-year-old Iwo has to take responsibility for his younger sister. The boy breaks his promise not to go near the mill, and soon the townspeople begin to experience one strange event after another. From that moment on, Iwo realises that his new responsibility is bigger than himself.
This family adventure film has elements of horror and sci-fi. It grapples with accepting those around you as well as the responsibility of being on your own, coping without the help of your parents or the support of your friends. The film is popular in Poland and is based on a book by Marcin Szczygielski, one of the widest read European children’s authors today.
